Bimbo’s Daring Escape from London Airport.
A rhesus destined for laboratory research made a spectacular escape from London Airport in 1966. She gained worldwide fame over her 204-day freedom.
On August 9, th. A female rhesus escaped from London Airport in 1966 and became the darling for the world press and public, who were fascinated by her ability to outwit her human chasers. She had a great time evading capture for six months and twenty-one days in the British Overseas Airways Corporation cargo warehouse at Heathrow Airport. Media christened her Bimbo and she became a celebrity.
She arrived at Heathrow with 99 other passengers on a Quantas flight from Delhi, bound for the USA, destined for vivisection. She sat down in the cargo area and contemplated her future. As this story shows, she was a very intelligent woman. She carefully removed the wire from her cage, and said her goodbyes to her poor comrades.
She was missing for several hours before her disappearance was reported.
She then found a place to hide in the roof, and looked around. The environment was perfect, air-conditioned, heated, and full of metal girders to climb, pipes and conduits to swing on. Every day there were crates full of delicious fruit and vegetables to steal and eat. The search for her was launched several hours after she left the airport. She was watching from the roof of the building.
